Is hiring a transfer service worth it? Or, should I do it myself?
Sometimes, it makes financial sense to do things yourself, and other times it makes sense to hire someone to do it for you. As a rule of thumb, the break even point on do-it-yourself cost vs. hiring Digitize My Memories LLC to do the transfer for you is around 25 items (vinyl records, VHS tapes, etc.). Keep in mind, this is purely cost-based and does not include the cost of your time (which is very valuable). It is also important to consider if you have the right equipment to do a transfer yourself, as well as a super-fast computer and a keen knowledge of editing software. This can add considerable cost to your do-it-yourself project.

You can be assured that the money you spend on a transfer service will be well worth it, and your memories can be enjoyed for years to come! For more information, check out our blog!

Is this legal?
We are unable to digitize any copyrighted video material. You do have the legal right to make personal copies of music that you are in possession of, even if it is copyrighted. It is not illegal to pay someone to help you do it. However, there is a risk to us that this media may be further copied or distributed after it leaves our hands, so we do insist that our customers agree to our terms and conditions as part of the check-out process. Our terms state that (1) you are the owner of the media, (2) that the copies are for your personal use and (3) that Digitize My Memories LLC is not responsible for additional copies not made by us. More information, do an internet search on the "Fair Use Law".

How do I get my media to you?
Our Ship To address is:
Digitize My Memories LLC
2902 Oak st
Lakewood, CO 80215

Although we provide free return shipping, you are responsible for the cost of shipping your media to us. This way you have the ability to lovingly pack your memories yourself (we know how important these things are) and not have to wait around for several days for us to ship an empty box to you. Digitize My Memories LLC is not responsible for damage to your media that may occur during shipping to us; however, we have never had anything arrive in a damaged state.

If you live in the Denver, Colorado Metro Area, you may be able to save on shipping. Just give us a call to arrange a drop off time if you prefer to not ship your media.
hr
Shipping: How much will it cost when Digitize My Memories LLC ships my order back to me?
Absolutely nothing! We will pay to ship back to you if you live in the United States! We use USPS media mail, so your record should arrive in 5-7 business days (longer for Alaska and Hawaii). If you need your order sooner, you can upgrade to USPS Priority shipping for $3.95.
hr
How can I check my order status?
We will let you know when we have received your media (as we may have specific questions), and when we have completed your order. If you would like to know further details of your order status, please feel free to call or email us.
hr
How long will it take for you to complete my order?
Once we receive your media, we can complete a small order (less than ten) in a week or less. It will take a little longer (1 to 2 weeks) for orders over ten. If you have a rush order, just let us know! If we can accommodate it, we will do it at no extra charge.
hr
How can I contact you for additional questions/clarifications or customizing options?
Please call or email us before sending us your order so that we can work with you on getting your order just the way you want it. The best way for us to expand our business is to make you satisfied, so please do not hesitate to ask! Some of our best products have come from custom orders!
hr
What kind of guarantee comes with this service?
We completely stand behind our work and we want you to be 100% satisfied. The transfer process is highly automated, so it is certainly possible that there could be some undetected errors. If there is something wrong with the transfer itself, such as a song is cut off too soon, files are mislabeled, etc. we would ask that you please give us the chance to make it right. Many times we will not need the original media to fix these errors.

However, we cannot fix things that are inherent in the media itself. We will contact you if your media will not transfer successfully.
hr
What is the quality of the music transfer for LP's and audio cassette tapes?
There are so many cheap usb turntables in the market that produce poor quality music transfers. We use a belt-driven, studio quality Project Debut III for our vinyl transfers. We also use the pre-amplifier from the Project Debut III for our audio cassette transfers. So, from the start, you are getting great quality!

We take vinyl one step further (this is not necessary with audio cassette tapes) with an electronic cleaning process to remove hiss, pops and clicks. When played side-by-side, you will most likely prefer the sound of the transferred CD over the original record. It literally does bring new life and clarity to your well loved records. However, electronically cleaning your music too much can degrade the quality of the music, so we strive to find a good balance between removing as much of the pops, hisses and clicks that we can while preserving the record's original sound. Keep in mind that we cannot digitally remove imperfections inherent to the record itself, such as scratches or major warping. We will let you know if a record is too damaged to transfer successfully.
hr
What is the quality of a 45rpm and 78rpm transfer?
The quality really does depend on the age and the condition of the vinyl. Typically, 45rpm records transfer well but may have more inherent background noise than an LP. For 78rpm records, expect there to be a significant amount of background noise as these are usually quite old and fragile. Even after electronic cleaning, we cannot remove all of this noise. *We do use a special 78rpm stylus.
hr
What is the difference between the standard and premium audio packages?
The music quality is no different. You also get your music split into tracks and a typed out playlist. The main difference is the standard package does not include the album artwork reproduction. Check out our side by side comparison on our audio page for more information.
hr
When would I want to "Pay By The Track" vs. choosing a package?
Paying by the track makes sense for 12" singles, 45rpm and 78rpm records where there is typically one track per side. We usually try to fit as many tracks onto one CD and can arrange them in whatever order you would like. With paying by the track, you can also mix and match as many tracks as you would like from a variety of vinyl records without having to transfer the entire album.
hr
How do I know if I want an audio CD or an mp3 CD?
If you would like to listen to your records in the car or in a regular CD player, then you probably would like an audio CD. This is the most similar to a CD you would buy in the store. If you would like to upload your songs to an MP3 device, such as an ipod, then you probably would like an MP3 CD . This is similar to downloading songs from iTunes.
hr
What is your transfer process for vinyl records?
First, we clean your records (we do not use soaps, detergents or tap water) and then we play your record on our turntable. Our turntable is connected to our computer's USB port and is the sound is recorded in stereo. We then digitally clean your music to reduce the hisses, pops and clicks as well as split your music into their appropriate tracks. Finally, we burn your music to CD and send it back to you!
hr
Can I get a replacement CD or DVD if mine is lost or damaged?
We back up all of our music transfers in .mp3 format free of charge, so you can replace a lost or damaged CD at any time for $3.95. For video, the cost of long term storage due to the large amount of data will not allow us to offer this service for free. We are currently developing the best possible storage solution, so call us if you are interested in taking part in this effort!
hr
What type of video formats can you transfer?
Currently, we can transfer VHS, VHS-c, Hi-8, Digital 8 and MiniDV. We may be adding more video formats in the near future.
hr
What is the quality of the video transfer?
Our premium packages offers all kinds of niceties to clean up your original video, but a word of warning- the quality of the DVD video will only be as good as the tape. While some amazing things can be done with our digital editing techniques, if the video was originally shot out of focus with the wind in the microphone, we can't make it look like HD with surround sound. Just like with audio, it is a fine art to digital editing, too much can be just as bad as too little. Our personal guarantee is staked on this point as we strive for customer satisfaction. If you are unhappy with your video transer quality, we hope you will give us the chance to make it right. If not we will refund your money.

That being said, for all of our packages regardless of cost, we set our capture process to be the same quality as movie studio produced DVDs. Our studio equipment is well cared for with regular maintenance. Our combination of equipment, knowledge and dedication to service ensures the best transfer possible.
hr
What is the difference between the standard and premium video packages?
There are two main differences:
1. How your video will play once you pop it onto your player. With the standard package, there will be no menu screen and your video will automatically start playing just like your video-tape originally did. The premium package will have a menu screen with all of your video chapters labeled, much like a movie DVD you would buy at the store. So, you can choose what parts of your video you would like to watch with the click of a button.
2. We manually look at the quality of the video and digitally clean it if necessary (color balancing, contrast adjustments, brightness or jitter stabilization). Check out the video page for an enhancement example. Got more questions? Give us a call or please refer to our side-by-side comparison on our video page for more information.
hr
Tell me more about diskless transfer.
If you want your video transferred to a hard drive instead of a DVD, then this is the package for you! This is for those folks who want total flexibility of their media to allow you to instantly access your video. You can easily create small clips and post them to social media sites for sharing, create tags and metadata for easy archival and searching, or put your own special effects on them and much, much more. With this transfer option, you have a choice of sending us your own Mass Storage device, or if you prefer, we will purchase one for you and bill you upon shipment.
hr
How can I determine how much home video footage is on each videotape?
If you still have a VCR, this is a piece of cake. Pop it in and rewind it all the way. Reset the counter (surefire way is to eject and re-insert the tape) and fast forward to the end of the video. Look at the counter when the video ends and that is your answer. On second thought, that is a lot of hassle. We don't charge by the minute or hour as some of our competitors do, so if you don't want to do this, just send us the tape and we will take care of it.
hr
How many home videos will fit on a single DVD?
For simplicity, we put one video tape to one DVD. If you have something different in mind, let us know! Please be advised that a DVD holds about 2 hours of video, and we recommend only putting 90 minutes onto a DVD. So, combining several home videos onto one DVD just simply may not fit, and will probably not save you money unless you are paying for the premium package.
hr
What if the videotape is just slightly over 2 hours in length?
It will be okay, there is no need to panic. There is a gradual reduction in video quality, but it will not be noticable in general. A few minutes or even tens of minutes is okay, but much longer than that and we will split the tape into multiple DVDs, and there may be additional charges.
hr
Do you repair broken videotape?
Breaks in the tape: YES. Run over by a bulldozer: NO.
hr
Can you transfer only a part of my videotape to DVD?
Our standard package is a highly automated process that does not allow for start/stop type of editing. If you are interested in getting your video edited, you have two options. Choose our premium transer service where editing is included, or choose our all diskless transfer service that you can edit yourself.
hr
What is NTSC? PAL? Will this affect my transfer?
No technical field would be complete without its own jargon. Different regions of the world utilize different video formats, NTSC is the standard format in North America. PAL is the standard format of Europe and some of Asia. You cannot, for instance, play a PAL tape in a NTSC player. For most customers, this is transparent and NTSC is our standard. However, if you plan on sending your DVD overseas, please let us know and we can record in PAL format.
hr
Can I add music to my DVD?
If you are using our premium transfer service and provide the music, YES- for no additional cost! When making your order, please give us a call to help us understand your request and we will make it happen. Keep in mind that since music is copyrighted, the DVD's need to be for personal use only.
hr
How long do DVDs last?
We use archival quality Taiyo Yuden DVDs for all of our projects. These discs are on the leading edge of extending disc durabilty and are rated for 70 years. However, the biggest factor to how long a disk will last is how you treat it. Keep all media out of direct sunlight, in a nice cool dry dark place and this should take care of your worries. We will soon be offering digtial back-up services of your video to give you the peace of mind that, even if something happens to your original DVD, that you can always get another copy.
hr
How do I order additional copies of my DVDs after my order is completed?
The first and easiest way is to order copies with your original order. But... if you find that your Aunt Sally wants a copy after you have received your completed order you will need to send us your DVD (as we do not automatically back-up our customer's video). We will only charge you a copying fee, not what it cost you to do the original transfer.

*If you use our digital back-up service, you can get a DVD copy anytime! Just give us a call!
